To Teach a Bird to Fly

It’s a docufiction that tells the story of bird extinction from the point of view of northern bald ibis, and the reintroduction project attempting to bring this species back in Europe. The short film is directed by award winning media artists Minna Rainio and Mark Roberts.

The narrative voice of the film comes from the future, beyond the time of two generations, where a woman tells us about her grandmother, who worked as a foster mother for critically endangered species. To Teach A Bird To Fly follows a reintroduction project in Germany, where a young woman is parenting birds. From the day the birds are born, she spends all of her time with waldrapps, feeding and nurturing them. When the time is ready, she teaches the birds to migrate in Tuscany, Italy, for avoiding winters deadly grasp. The waldrapps learn to migrate following their foster mothers powered parachute. Together they fly over the Alps.
