World Oceans Day takes place annually on the 8th of June. The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Red Dot on the Ocean
After reading about Ernest Shackleton and Arctic explorers, Matt became obsessed with sailing alone through the Northwest Passage – the mostly ice-clogged route through the Arctic linking the Atlantic to the Pacific. That obsession became a 27,000 mile quest to be the first sailor to circumnavigate the Americas alone without stopping.
Red Dot on the Ocean is full of surprises. It is beyond inspiring, a film that makes us all feel we can do and endure more than we imagine.
The Spark: Tapping into the Ocean’s Energy
The oceans generate enough energy for us to give up coal and gas completely, but no one has been able to harness it effectively. The Triton is a wave harvester that uses a novel design which may be the key to unlocking the power of the ocean.
Straws
STRAWS is a powerful documentary about plastic pollution that inundate our waterways and oceans. The film illustrates how individuals, groups, and businesses around the globe are reducing plastic straw use through education, collaboration, policy development and utilization of non-plastic alternatives. Narrated by actor Tim Robbins
Aircraft Carrier: Guardian of the Seas
The mission to protect and defend the world’s oceans has become far more complex and challenging in recent years, and naval aviation has become increasingly vital to success. One of the greatest engineering feats in naval maritime history, the modern Nimitz-class carrier is a masterpiece of technology, and the flagship of the fleet. With RIMPAC, the world’s largest and most comprehensive international maritime training exercise providing a stunning visual context for the story, find yourself aboard the USS Ronald Reagan alongside the 5,000 highly skilled sea and air personnel conducting flight operations in the midst of the simulated war exercises taking place there.
Taming Jaws: The Movie
Jaws, a swell off the coast of Maui, is one of the fiercest waves on the planet and has a reputation for wiping out even the most experienced surfers. In Taming Jaws, Brad Domke sets out to achieve the impossible by skimboarding at the break.
With cautionary tales from Trevor Carlson and Skullbase brothers DK and Shaun Walsh, Taming Jaws tells the story of a man looking to push his sport to the next level whilst writing his name alongside a pantheon of world class wave riders.
