Sriracha
It has been named “Ingredient of the Year” by Bon Appetit Magazine, and “Best Tasting Hot Sauce,” according to Cooks Illustrated. In 2012, Huy Fong Foods sold 20 million bottles of Sriracha! That’s 100 million pounds of chiles!
But even with its cult following — the recipes, the t-shirts, the tattoos — most fans don’t know the amazing story of the creation of this Thai flavor, nor would they recognize David Tran, the founder of the Huy Fong Foods and the man responsible for popularizing Sriracha sauce in the USA. Tran, a Vietnamese farmer born in 1945, fled his home country after the Vietnam War. He named his company for the old Panamanian freighter, the “Huey Fong,” that carried Tran and over 3,000 other refugees to America in 1978. This fast-paced documentary film finally reveals the amazing story of Sriracha — where it comes from, how it’s made, and the people who love it.
