1001 Cuts

Dozens of female surgeons share their experiences of harassment, discrimination, and resilience inside one of medicine’s last male-dominated frontiers — and make the case for a culture that can no longer afford not to change.

Overview

1001 Cuts takes an unflinching look at the experiences of women in professional surgery — a field transformed by Title IX legislation in 1972, yet still defined by a deeply masculine culture. Despite women now making up nearly half of surgical trainees, leadership remains disproportionately male, harassment is treated as routine, and even surgical tools are designed around male bodies. Through the testimonies of dozens of surgeons and medical students — many of whom spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation — the film documents years of gender discrimination and the quiet toll it takes on careers, wellbeing, and ultimately patient care. But it is also a film about persistence. The women featured represent countless dedicated physicians who show up every day despite systemic barriers, and whose voices are collectively building the case for a long-overdue cultural reckoning within one of the world’s most high-stakes professions.
