Brilliant Ideas: Yinka Shonibare

Bloomberg’s Brilliant Ideas looks at the most exciting and acclaimed artists at work in the world today. We will feature top names and up-and-coming artists, the stars of tomorrow; painters, sculptors, digital, conceptual and performance artists, photographers, land and street artists. Bloomberg TV has covered the globe to talk with these artists in their studios and exhibition points. Through intimate conversations we reveal their Brilliant Ideas.

Born 1962 in London, Yinka grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. He returned to study Fine Art in London, where he lives and work. Yinka explores big ideas – Empire, globalisation, money, war, race and class – with wit and exuberant colour. He works in painting, sculpture, photography, film and performance. A key material in Yinka’s work are the brightly coloured ‘African’ fabrics (Dutch wax printed cotton) that he buys himself from London markets. In 2010, his ‘Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle’ became his first public art commission on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. He has exhibited at the Venice Biennale and at leading museums worldwide.
