Wangechi Mutu was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1972, and is now based in New York. She works in a range of media including drawing, painting, sculpture and installation. She draws on her experiences and observations to contrast Western and African cultures. Her work confronts racial and gender stereotypes and explores colonial history, African politics and the worldwide fashion industry. Wangechi is best known for her complex paintings & collages of the female body and she is also a committed campaigner for LGBT rights in Africa.
