Brilliant Ideas: Mariko Mori

Bloomberg’s Brilliant Ideas looks at the most exciting and acclaimed artists at work in the world today. We will feature top names and up-and-coming artists, the stars of tomorrow; painters, sculptors, digital, conceptual and performance artists, photographers, land and street artists. Bloomberg TV has covered the globe to talk with these artists in their studios and exhibition points. Through intimate conversations we reveal their Brilliant Ideas.

Born in Tokyo in 1967, Mariko Mori burst onto the art scene in the 1990s. She has won international acclaim for her innovative multimedia works. Her early work mixed Japanese pop culture and manga imagery with high tech architecture and futuristic costumes. Drawing from ancient rituals and symbols, Mariko uses cutting edge technology to create striking visions for the 21st century. Her sculptures and mixed media installations are meditative, spiritual and ethereal. They often have another-worldly, sci-fi look and feel, and have been acquired by museums and collectors worldwide. Mariko has had solo shows at the Brooklyn Museum, the Royal Academy in London, the Pompidou in Paris and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
