Born in Chicago in 1973, Theaster Gates is now one of the most talked about artists in the world. He is a visual artist, social activist, urban planner, musical performer and teacher. He is Professor in the Dept. of Visual Art at the University of Chicago. From his base in South Side district of the city, Theaster is redefining the role of the artist. His sculptures, installations, performances are about genuine social change. He buys and renovates derelict properties, using the materials he finds there – floorboards, tar, fire hoses – to create works. He won the prestigious Artes Mundi prize in 2015. Gates has exhibited and performed at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Punta della Dogana, Venice; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; and Documenta 13, Kassel, Germany; among others.
